As part of the arts collective Buffalo, I worked in partnership with Purple Patch Arts to create a multi-sensory installation based on Dylan Thomas’ play, ‘Under Milk Wood’ which was funded by Arts Council England and exhibited at Leeds Central Library in 2015. The project, ‘Dreams of Milk Wood’, was inspired by, created with, and open to audiences with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), and aimed to explore and reveal Under Milk Wood to both mainstream and disabled audiences in new ways, challenging assumptions on how people with disabilities might collaborate and engage in high quality, innovative art.

It was definitely a great experience to work with Purple Patch, exploring new ways to design spaces (physically and sonically) and helping us to look at innovative ways to create this piece of work. They made us feel at ease and welcomed us along to some of their workshops which really fed into the work. Everyone was really friendly, helpful, knowledgable and hands-on whilst also allowing us to very much bring our own ideas to life. I would definitely recommend working with Purple Patch; their ethos, ways of working and vision are admirable and of the highest quality in their field. I hope to work on another project together very soon!

The best bit is seeing a sense of achievement in the participants as they learn, have fun and become more confident and independent.

If I didn’t have a bursary I wouldn’t be able to come, and I’m so glad that I can. It makes me happy to be part of the group.
